Motor cycling biking & hiking
Blackwater Castle is located within 10 miles of the Ballyhoura Mountains where you will find the largest mountain bike trail network of it’s kind in Ireland. 98 km of trails including forest road climbs, tight twisty singletrack with loads of ups and downs, board walk, tight turns and technical rocky bits are guaranteed to leave you smiling. The trails range from the moderate 6 km Greenwood loop to the demanding Castlepook loop, over 50 km in length. The Ballyhoura range is also ideal for hikers and if you wish we can organise guided tours and packed lunches for you. Check out this video on the Irish Times home page as the Ballyhoura trails are in contention for The Best Place to Go Wild in Ireland.
Bikers are always welcome at Blackwater Castle. The owner, Patrick Nordstrom is a co-author of Motor Cycle Tours in Southern Ireland and is always willing to devise routes or guide trips on out of the way and forgotten routes in the area and beyond. His garage is always open for running repairs in the event of technical troubles. Blackwater Castle is based in the Blackwater Valley just south of the Ballyhoura region and centrally located for day trips to the Ring of Kerry, the Beara Peninsula, The Vee, East Cork, and even day trips to the Shannon Region and West Coast of Clare are possible from here.
